The story behind the name is such that Syed Banda Nawaz Gaisu Daraz migrated from Iraq to Iran and then to Afghanistan. He was a scholar and poet. He married a Pushtun lady from Kakar tribe. When she gave birth to a boy and the news reached Gaisu Daraz, he was writing a poem. So he named the boy "Mashwani". Mashwanis are mostly located in Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa: Sirikot, Gudwalian (good valley), Basoo areas of Hazara division and Dir.
